I make quiet, paper-based works that explore fragility, structure, and the subtle tension between flaw and precision.
Irena Frantal is a visual artist working with paper-based media, artist’s books, and sculptural drawing. Her practice explores silence, fragility, and the subtle discomforts embedded in form and perception. Often minimalist and process-oriented, her work engages with symmetry, imperfection, and the tactile presence of materials—inviting viewers into a space of focused, quiet attention.
Rooted in the artist’s long engagement with book arts, her projects frequently investigate the book as a sculptural object and site of spatial thinking. She often works with folding, layering, and the interplay between flatness and volume. Her pieces are intentionally restrained, holding tension between precision and flaw, structure and vulnerability.
Frantal has exhibited widely in Europe and internationally, and her works are included in the collections of institutions such as the MAK Vienna and The New Art Gallery Walsall. She has participated in residencies including Art Omi (USA), coGalleries Berlin, and Kultivera Sweden, and is a recipient of the EU-funded Culture Moves Europe mobility grant.
